- The first thing to do in any lockout situation, even before you’ve called a locksmith is make sure that you are safe. If you car or truck is parked in an unsafe area, then get to a safe place as soon as you can. Sometimes people make the mistake of not wanting to leave the car, but the truth is that your own personal safety is more important that the vehicle. Cars can be replaced, and hopefully you have good auto insurance anyway. Take care of yourself first. A locksmith for cars can make arrangements to meet you at your vehicle if need be, so you don’t need to wait around it it’s not safe.
- While you are waiting for a locksmith to arrive, call a friend or family member to let them know where you are and what happened. It’s also a good idea to give them the name of the locksmith for car company that you’ve called. Whenever you are in an emergency situation, it’s always a good idea just to make sure someone that cares about you knows what is going on.
This may be the most important one!
- The next thing to do, which hopefully goes without saying, is to not break the window to get in. Sometimes people think that if they break the window, then they can get access, get the keys and drive away. Problem solved. BUt this is more often than not a big mistake. First of all, usually the keys are not in the car. So after you break the window you won’t find the keys but you will have a broken window. In fact, most new cars come with a mechanism in the key to prevent lockouts from inside. Second, The cost of fixing a broken window is more than the cost of paying for a locksmith for your car. Third, you’ll probably hurt yourself on the glass and have a messy clean up. Not a good idea!
Stay calm, it will all be OK!
- Before you call a locksmith, take a deep breath and think about where your keys might be. This sounds silly to mention, but the truth is that many people find their keys either once the locksmith has arrived or shortly after he has left. Sometimes in a panic we loose sight of the obvious. So look around the car, and think about the last place you were, before panicking.
- When you call a locksmith try to get a quote over the phone. A good locksmith will be upfront with you and communicate well. Getting into a locked car is not rocket science nor is it out of the ordinary for an experienced locksmith. Once the locksmith knows your location and car, there is no reason you can’t get a quote.
- A good locksmith will never damage your car. Not much more to say here. If there’s damage then the locksmith for cars did something wrong.
- Thank the locksmith for his or her services. Just because your paying him or her does not mean you should not be thankful. Locksmiths do not make much money on car lockouts. Therefore, especially for late night calls, their service should be properly appreciated.
